There had been Selsey Open Gardens events in the past but discontinued circa 2010. The current open gardens format started back in 2019 and formed part of the Selsey Walking and Outdoor Festival (SWOF). It was a notable success and was to continue in place of SWOF.
Events in 2020 and 2021 were stopped due to Covid, but several garden owners organised a virtual tour.
It has grown in popularity with the number of visitors increasing each year. 2019 around 400 and over 700 in 2024.
Apart from being a wonderful community event it raises funds for several charities and good causes. The events have raised in total over £19000 the main beneficiary is The Selsey First Responders receiving over £13000.
Sponsorship is a crucial factor in helping to manage the event, especially with costs associated with publicity, printing of programmes, etc. This finance is key to allow more of what we raise to go to charity.
We have been fortunate to have local business involved. 2019 was Selsey and Chichester locksmiths, followed in 2022 by The Crown Public House. Thrive has been our main sponsor since 2023.
The number of gardens taking part is around 20, 2024 had 24 the highest so far.
